Billionaire Jared Isaacman is among the few civilians to walk space. The entrepreneur founded Shift4 Payments at age 15 and, by his early 20s, was a self-made billionaire.
H e will command a crew of four on a mission called Polaris Dawn launching aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket from Florida on or after August 26.
The crew to be headed by seasoned pilot Isaacman, with more than 7,000 hours of experience flying fighter jets will include a mission pilot Scott Poteet, a mission specialist Sarah Gillis, and a mission specialist/medical officer Anna Menon. This spacewalk is expected to be the first commercial one, as the astronauts will be tethered to their spacecraft and taking oxygen through a hose.
With a net worth of $2 billion, Isaacman founded Shift4 Payments in 1999 and retains approximately 38% ownership. He is not only an advanced-rated pilot but holds world records for speed around the globe. Formerly, he was the mission commander for Inspiration4, raising more than $240 million in charity. He also co-founded Draken International, the largest and fastest private air force in the world.
Polaris Dawn, which will fly the highest Earth orbit ever flown on a Crew Dragon, will make a direct entry to the Van Allen radiation belts, from which it is hoped information will be gained about effects of space travel and radiation upon the human body. In addition to its role in testing Starlink laser-based communications from space, developed by SpaceX, the mission will involve testing EVA spacesuits developed by the company, necessary for all long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars.
